The Colorado Avalanche on Sunday added depth center John Mitchell to the team, signing the former New York Ranger to a two-year, $2.2 million free-agent contract.

Mitchell played 63 games for the Eastern Conference champion Rangers, scoring five goals and 16 points, with a plus-10. He becomes the replacement center for Jay McClement, who will leave the Avs via free agency.

Mitchell, 27, averaged 10:09 of ice time for the Rangers and won 51.8 percent of his faceoffs. The Ontario native is 6-1, 195 pounds.
