Landeskog lifts Avalanche past Islanders
Summary of game NY Islanders vs Colorado Avalanche.Gabriel Landeskog had two power-play goals and an assist to help the Colorado Avalanche defeat the New York Islanders 6-1 at Pepsi Center on Sunday.
Landeskog scored his first goal to give the Avalanche a 4-0 lead at 16:35 of the second period. Islanders coach Doug Weight was assessed a bench minor and game misconduct after the goal.
Landeskog scored his second goal and 16th of the season at 18:24 during a 5-on-3 power play for a 5-0 lead after Scott Mayfield was penalized for cross-checking Nathan MacKinnon.
Carl Soderberg, Matt Nieto and Patrik Nemeth also scored for the Avalanche (19-16-3), who have gone 2-1-0 in the first three games of a six-game homestand and 4-1-1 in the past six games.
Jonathan Bernier made 27 saves and MacKinnon had three assists. The Islanders (20-15-4) lost both games of their road trip in regulation and are 2-3-1 in their past six.
The Avalanche outshot the Islanders 35-15 in the second period, scored four goals and chased Jaroslav Halak, who allowed five goals on 35 shots and was replaced by Thomas Greiss to begin the third period.
The Islanders made it 5-1 when Josh Bailey extended his point streak to 11 games with his 12th goal at 12:24 of the third.
Erik Johnson scored his fifth at 13:04 to make it 6-1. Nieto scored his sixth in the slot at 5:25 of the second period for a 2-0 lead off a pass from Soderberg after Blake Comeau stripped the puck from Nick Leddy behind the net.
Soderberg lifted the rebound of Colin Wilson's shot over Halak's left pad at 12:30 for his seventh goal and a 3-1 lead.
The Avalanche took a 1-0 lead on Nemeth's second goal at 9:31 of the first period. Colorado killed three New York power plays and have killed 32 straight penalties in the past 11 games.
