The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced today that the team has signed defenseman Shane O’Brien to a one-year contract through the 2011-12 season.

O’Brien, 27, appeared in 80 games for the Nashville Predators this past season, tallying nine points (2g/7a) and 83 penalty minutes.  His 80 games matched his career high set in 2006-07.  The Port Hope, Ontario native also dressed in 12 playoff games for Nashville (0g/0a).

“We are pleased to have Shane under contract,” said Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman.  “He adds depth and brings an element to our defense.”

Selected by Anaheim in the eighth round (250th overall) of the 2003 Entry Draft, O’Brien has appeared in 379 career NHL games with Anaheim, Tampa Bay, Vancouver and Nashville.  He has totaled 64 points (10g/54a) and 688 penalty minutes.  He has also skated in 40 career playoff games, recording two goals and three assists.
