Cutthroats´ players in the Monsters camp

Cutthroats´ players in the Monsters campDenver Cutthroats forwards AJ Gale and Brad Smyth are both beginning their preseason with the Lake Erie Monsters.

The Monsters are the top affiliate of the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche, the parent club of the Cutthroats. “This is why we entered into our affiliation agreement with the Avalanche,” said Cutthroats Head Coach Derek Armstrong. “It provides opportunities at the next level for our players. AJ is a young player and his career is still developing. (Smyth) is a veteran returning to a level where he’s had a lot of success in the past and it gives him a chance to be a leader for some of the younger players up there.”

Smyth has played 610 games in the AHL during his career and is a former league MVP with the Carolina Monarchs in 1995-96.  For Gale, this is his first trip to the AHL.  Both players competed in Europe last season.

Armstrong will also be present at Monsters camp assisting in on-ice practices.

“I’m looking forward to getting on the ice as a coach and working with the players,” added Armstrong.  “The season is here. I’m excited to see our guys compete at the AHL level in camp and I’m excited to see our guys compete in Denver as we approach the season opener.”

Players report to Cutthroats training camp on October 5 and the team will have their first practice on October 8 to prepare for their inaugural season in the Central Hockey League.

Opening weekend for the Cutthroats is October 19 and 20 against the visiting Missouri Mavericks.
