Worn with Shame

Anyone else remember when it was cool to be an Avalanche fan? Me either!

After watching an absolute embarrassing lost to the Oilers tonight I begin to question the idea of being an Avs fan. I don’t feel I am alone on this. After every game I see comment of people no longer willing to pay to go to game. Season ticket holders who just can’t see any way they will be renewing next year.

I remember the glory days of contending each year. Sellouts and Division championship year after year, the greatest rivalry of the late 90’s and early 00’s with the Wings. When being an Avs fan meant having some pride in your team. When you saw someone wearing Red Wings gear and told them to suck your @#$%, now when I see someone in Red Wings gear I just put my head down and keep walking. Sure I still hate this stranger with a fiery passion. But I would never dare speak up for I have no legs to stand on now as an Avs fan.

So many fans ask who to blame for this sad state. Blame Sacco he a minor league coach at best and just a helpless yes man. Blame Sherman for making some bad trades and being unable to sign the good players. Blame ownership for not willing to open the purse strings and buy a championship like the good old days.  Blame players who are not living up to their big paydays. In the end this team just sucks, ya I said it with a tear in my eye.

If after a pathetic showing there isn’t some sort of changes with the Avs. Then you know it just time to throw in the towel and give up. I used to hate Anderson for what he did. But now I see he just saw the future and got out while he could. O’Reilly wants 5 million to play for this team, sure it selfish and he’s not worth it yet. But can you blame the guy he wants to win games and he most likely doesn’t see that happening here. I would not be surprised if after a trade he signs a bridge deal with his new team. How lucky is Avs management that Landy and Ducty grew up fans of this team? So damn lucky that it will probably be the only reason they can keep them around in the long run. Same goes with Varly better get Roy to give him call before he jumps shit on us.

Were we Avs fans spoiled by making the playoffs in that first year of a rebuild? Did we expect to much because of it? Yes, but 4 years later is it too much to ask for a team to compete night in and night out? NO! The first thing the Avs need to change is that marketing slogan. “Worn with Pride” yea right it will be a long time before I ever wear any Avs gear with pride again and I don’t think I am alone.
