Trade: Jones, O´Brien for Tanguay, Sarich

“We are excited to have Alex back with the organization,” said Avalanche Executive Vice President of Hockey Operations Joe Sakic. “He is coming off a solid season and his experience will be beneficial to our young players.  Cory is a veteran defenseman who will help our back end.”

Alex Tanguay, 33, finished tied for third on the Flames in scoring this past season with 27 points (11g/16a) in 40 games. The St. Justine, Quebec native was also third on the club in goals and tied for fifth in assists. 

Selected by Colorado in the first round (12th overall) of the 1998 Entry Draft, Tanguay spent his first six NHL seasons with the Avalanche from 1999 to 2006. He recorded 400 points (137g/263a) in 450 regular season games with the Avs, which still ranks ninth on the franchise’s all-time scoring chart. He also appeared in 83 playoff contests with Colorado (18g/32a) and scored two goals, including the game winner, in Game 7 of the 2001 Stanley Cup Final against New Jersey.

Overall, Tanguay has recorded 762 points (249g/513a) in 922 career NHL games with Colorado, Calgary, Montreal and Tampa Bay. He has reached the 20-goal mark on six occasions and has posted a combined +149 plus/minus rating during his career. The left winger has also skated in 98 playoff games, tallying 59 points (19g/40a).

Cory Sarich, 34, has appeared in 915 games during his NHL career, totaling 148 points (20g/128a) and 1,051 penalty minutes. He dressed in 28 games for Calgary during this past season, recording two assists. 

Selected by Buffalo in the second round (27th overall) of the 1996 Entry Draft, Sarich began his career with the Sabres before spending seven seasons with the Lightning (1999-00 to 2006-07) and the past six seasons with the Flames (2007-08 to 2012-13). In 2003-04, he appeared in all 23 playoff games for Tampa Bay in helping the Lightning capture their first Stanley Cup.  Sarich had a streak of 453 consecutive games played from 2001 to 2008.
