O'Reilly's OT goal leads Avs past Kings

O'Reilly's OT goal leads Avs past KingsColorado won first game in new season.

Ryan O'Reilly's short-handed, whirling dervish of a goal 45 seconds into overtime Friday night capped a two-goal, third-period comeback for the Avalanche in a 4-3 win against Los Angeles at Pepsi Center.

Dwight King's power-play goal 38 seconds into the third period put the Kings up 3-1, but Steve Downie roofed a power-play goal at 3:20, and O'Reilly forced overtime by pumping his own rebound behind Martin Jones at 9:37.

"If we [kept] working the right way, we [were] going to have success in the third, and we absolutely did," O'Reilly said. "We stuck to the system and guys kept working hard."

Colorado's Andre Benoit beat Ben Scrivens 26 seconds after the opening faceoff to give the Avalanche a quick lead, but Justin Williams' power-play goal 25 seconds later got the Kings even, and Los Angeles went ahead 2-1 at 3:10 when Denver native Nick Shore one-timed a Williams' pass behind Sami Aittokallio.

"I'm extremely happy," Colorado coach Patrick Roy said. "We've been working too hard in the past two weeks to not ... we deserve a better result. The guys just kept going, and [Ryan] did a super play there."
