Maple Leafs return home to face Avs

Season series: This is the first of two games between the Colorado Avalanche and Toronto Maple Leafs. They will face each other again on Nov. 6 at Pepsi Center.
Avalanche team scope: It literally took until the final second of their game Monday for the Avalanche to earn their first win of the season. Daniel Briere scored his 300th career goal with 0.4 seconds left in regulation to lift Colorado to a 2-1 victory against the Boston Bruins at TD Garden. "Hopefully there are many more to come but it's certainly a good feeling to find a loose puck like that late in the game and get a big win, especially after the start that we had," Briere said. "It's been a little bit of a roller coaster to start the season but we are hoping this game will get us on our way."
Maple Leafs team scope: Toronto held an optional skate at Air Canada Centre on Monday after scoring five second-period goals en route to a 6-3 win against the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on Sunday. Phil Kessel had a goal and two assists to help the Maple Leafs earn their first win of the season. "Obviously we are going to need contributions from all four lines if we're going to be a successful team and obviously we weren't pulling our weight the first two games," said forward James van Riemsdyk, who scored a shorthanded goal. "This is a good stepping stone."
