Varly could return for Avs vs Pens

Season series: Forward Blake Comeau, now with the Colorado Avalanche, scored the lone goal in the Pittsburgh Peguins' 1-0 overtime win against the Avalanche last season. Colorado won the next game, 3-1. Forward Gabriel Landeskog had a goal and two assists.
Avalanche team scope (7-10-1): Goaltender Semyon Varlamov returned to practice Tuesday after missing a week with a groin injury. Varlamov has been scratched for the last three games, but is traveling with Colorado on its road trip and could start. "He said it was a really good day. We'll see [Wednesday]," Roy told the Avalanche's website on Tuesday. "After today, [he'll let me know] how he feels tomorrow. If he feels good again, we'll put him on the ice again in Pittsburgh." Forward John Mitchell is day-to-day after re-injuring his oblique on Saturday, an injury that forced him to miss four games earlier in the season. The Avalanche claimed forward Chris Wagner off waivers on Sunday; he was the third-line center with Cody McLeod and Andreas Martinsen in their 5-1 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday.
Penguins team scope (11-7-0): Defenseman Olli Maatta was hospitalized overnight after sustaining an upper-body injury in Pittsburgh's 4-3 win against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday. Maatta hit an open door on the Wild's bench after colliding with Wild forward Nino Niederreiter. The Penguins said Maata was re-examined on Wednesday and is expected to miss 3-4 weeks; his injury is unrelated to any previous one he has sustained. Forward Evgeni Malkin had four points in the Penguins' win Tuesday, and his line with Phil Kessel and David Perron has been the most productive for the team with 23 points. Defenseman Kris Letang has eight points in his last eight games at Consol Energy Center.
