The Colorado Avalanche confirmed on Saturday that the club has signed goaltender Semyon Varlamov to a three-year contract.  Varlamov was acquired from the Washington Capitals yesterday on July 1.

“We are proud to announce that Semyon has agreed to terms,” said
Avalanche General Manager/Executive Vice President Greg Sherman.  “We look forward to him starting his career with the Colorado Avalanche.”

Varlamov, 23, appeared in 27 games for the Capitals this past season, compiling an 11-9-5 record with a 2.23 goals-against average, .924 save percentage and two shutouts.  The Samara, Russia native finished fourth in the NHL in goals-against average and ranked sixth in save percentage.  Only the three Vezina Trophy Finalists, Boston’s Tim Thomas (2.00), Vancouver’s Roberto Luongo (2.11) and Nashville’s Pekka Rinne (2.12) had a lower GAA than Varlamov.

Selected by Washington in the first round (23rd overall) of the 2006 Entry Draft, Varlamov has compiled a 30-13-12 career record with a 2.39 GAA and .917 Sv% in 59 NHL appearances.  His save percentage ranks first all-time among Capitals netminders, while his goals-against average is second (based on a minimum of 3,000 minutes played).  Varlamov has also appeared in 19 career playoff games, fashioning a 10-9 record with a 2.49 GAA and .915 Sv%.
