WJC: Makar scores yet again

The 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship continued with the penultimate game day of the group stage, with a total of four games being played. The Czech Republic narrowly escaped an upset against Belarus, Sweden easily won against Switzerland, Finland didn’t allow a surprise against Slovakia and Canada, along with Avalanche prospects Cale Makar and Conor Timmins, dominated Denmark and secured first place in Group A.
Denmark – Canada 0:8 (0:3, 0:2, 0:3)
4. Thomas (Raddysh, Katchouk), 18. Howden (Comtois, Foote), 20. Steel (Clague, Kyrou), 28. Makar (Bean), 30. Howden (Foote, Formenton), 44. Formenton (Timmins), 50. McLeod, 53. Batherson (Foote, McLeod)
Canada dominated Denmark right from the get-go, never allowing the Danes to get into any kind of rhythm. The Canadians effectively sealed the game in the opening period, as they put three pucks past Denmark’s Emil Gransoe. Canada was once again stellar on the power-play, scoring on two man-advantages out of four. They also stayed disciplined, only taking two minor penalties in the latter half of the second period. Thanks to a two-goal second and three-goal final period, the Canadians outclassed Denmark by a score of 8:0 and secured the top spot in Group A, meaning that they won’t have to face Sweden in the round robin round.

Avs prospects Cale Makar and Conor Timmins were back in the midst of the cation, with Makar scoring the first goal of the second period on the power-play. Makar saw a rise in ice-time compared to Canada’s previous game against the US, playing a total of 15:48, mainly quarterbacking the man-advantage. Meanwhile, Timmins was once again among the leaders in TOI on Team Canada, with only his defensive Jake Bean the only Canadian to spend more time on the ice than the 19-year-old second round pick. Timmins also recorded an assist on Jake Formenton’s third-period goal and finished the night +4 with one shot on goal. The quarterfinals will be played tomorrow.
