Eurolanche’s anniversary meeting

The first European and biggest Fan Club of the Colorado Avalanche celebrated its 10th birthday on August 12, 2017. Eurolanche has thus achieved yet another big milestone, which further proves that the entire project is unrivaled on the entire NHL market. No other project is as old, or organizes similar events as Eurolanche does. During the entire 2016-17 season, the Fan Club celebrated its anniversary, with the celebrations being capped off by Eurolanche’s biggest-ever member meeting – 18 Fan Club members from Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Finland met in Poprad, Slovakia in the vicinity of the High Tatras.

Each participant of Eurolanche’s anniversary meeting received a welcome package with various Eurolanche and Colorado Avalanche memorabilia, including signed photos of Avalanche players. Following a toast and dinner, the participants watched a video commemorating Eurolanche’s most memorable moments, as well as video greetings from Joe Sakic, Adam Foote, Uwe Krupp, David Aebischer, Steven Reinprecht, Patrick Wiercioch, Nikita Zadorov, Mikhail Grigorenko, Tyson Barrie, Milan Hejduk, Peter Budaj, singer Jake Schroeder and sports announcer Alan Roach. This was followed up by a bowling tournament.

The next day began with a visit to the mayor of Poprad, with the participants receiving promotional material, as well as souvenirs to remind them of their visit to the city. Afterwards, the participants visited the ruins of the Spis Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the biggest European castles by area, where they took group photos with Eurolanche flags. The majority of participants wore a white T-shirt commemorating the Fan Club’s anniversary meeting. After lunch, the group had a surprise waiting for them – a meeting with former Washington Capitals star and the scorer of Slovakia’s golden goal at the 2002 World Championship Peter Bondra. Later, the participants played ball hockey and spent the rest of the evening in Poprad.

The third day of the meeting was the hardest, as a number of participants took a hike from Stary Smokovec to the Teryho Chalet, the cottage with the highest elevation in the entire High Tatras (2015 meters above sea level). The hike took about four hours, but the group made it without any problems. Other Fan Club members went to Zelene pleso (The Green Tarn), Hrebienok, Rainer’s Chalet and the Cold Creek Waterfalls. In the evening, the participants celebrated the 10th anniversary of Eurolanche, as the Fan Club came into existence on the exact date 10 years ago. Following a toast with Stranahan’s Colorado Whiskey, Fan Club members had cake decorated with Eurolanche’s anniversary logo and the logo of the meeting. The cake was followed up by a special raffle, with more than 30 Colorado Avalanche souvenirs being available as prizes. The raffle was Eurolanche’s biggest contest ever, as the main prizes were an authentic Avalanche jersey and a flag signed by the entire team, which came with a certificate of authenticity. Additional souvenirs and memorabilia were available to Eurolanche members, who could take them for free and as many as they liked. Although the meeting officially ended on the next day, several participants still managed to visit other interesting places in the region.

As part of the festivities, the public was presented with the cover of the book titled ’10 Years of the Eurolanche Fan Club’, which will be published in both Slovak and English in fall 2017, as well as the Yeti Ultras group for Eurolanche’s most active members.

Eurolanche Raid 2017

On March 24, 2017, the NHL officially announced what was already being talked about in the hockey community several weeks prior to the announcement – that the Colorado Avalanche would get to play two games in Europe. On November 10 and 11, the Avalanche will square off against the Ottawa Senators in the Ericsson Globe in Stockholm, Sweden. The games will be the first two regular season games the Avalanche will play in Europe, as well as their first appearance on the Old Continent since 2001, when the reigning Stanley Cup Champions spent a few days of training camp there before it was cut short due to the 9/11 attacks.

Thanks to several leaked news suggesting the event, we had enough time to prepare a special website – GlobalSeries2017.Eurolanche.com – which we launched at the exact moment the league officially confirmed the event. During the following days, the website offered Eurolanche members the opportunity to pre-register for the event and the Fan Club’s trip to Scandinavia. We received more than 100 registration forms from all around the world. No other event organized by Eurolanche garnered so much interest.

Since tickets for the games were supposed to be made available for purchase the following week, Fan Club members had to decide as quickly as possible. In the end, more than 52 fans from 10 countries and two continents decided to join Eurolanche on its trip to Sweden. Both the number of participants, as well as the number of represented countries, are the most in Eurolanche history. The numbers don’t even include dozens of other Fan Club members, who decided to travel to Sweden individually due to various reasons. One of my priorities was to take a group picture with as many Eurolanche members as possible in Stockholm.

The event later received its own name – Eurolanche Raid 2017. It was scheduled to begin on November 8 and end on November 12, so that we would have enough time for other interesting activities.

I wrote the paragraphs above in about two minutes. The entire organization of such a big event for so many people took me two full weeks of work. From dawn to dusk. Just take the number of preliminary registration forms we received. From the 100 fans who expressed their interest, each one of them had additional questions that had to be answered. It sure wasn’t fun, but after 14 endless days, I could finally say that not only did everyone already have game tickets (which we bought during the exclusive limited presale period), but that we also managed to book our plane tickets and accommodation.

During the following weeks and months, the program of the Eurolanche Raid 2017 began to take shape. We also began to upload content to GlobalSeries2017.Eurolanche.com, which we wanted to later serve as a tribute to the event like in the case of the StadiumSeries.Eurolanche.com website. Articles about the event, stories about previous Avalanche visits to Europe in the form of exclusive interviews with its direct participants, a gallery and, following the two games, stats, summaries and line-ups began to fill the newest sister website.

I thought about releasing this book by the end of 2017 to include a part about the Eurolanche Raid 2017. In the end, I decided against it because such a grand event with so many Eurolanche members in one place would be a great opportunity to present the book to the public. This is why you’ll be able to read everything about our trip to Sweden and our experience during the Eurolanche Raid 2017 at GlobalSeries2017.Eurolanche.com. I officially presented the book during our dinner in Stockholm on the second evening of our trip.

While I’m typing these sentences, I can only hope that it will be another great Eurolanche event. I can also tell you that each participant will receive a welcoming package with Fan Club souvenirs, including a T-shirt with the logo of the event, a custom-designed Viking head, after his or her arrival at the hotel.

Allow me to speculate a little at this point. The arrival of the Colorada Avalanche to Europe, the place where we live, has hands-down been a highlight for us. We didn’t have to travel thousands of kilometers to see our beloved team. Never before have the Avalanche been so close to us. The Avalanche coming directly to Bratislava would be the only thing more special to me personally.

What was behind the decision of the NHL to choose the Colorado Avalanche of all teams to embark on a journey Europe? Why would they choose what was without a doubt the worst team of the NHL the previous season, which currently lacks a star-caliber Swedish player like Peter Forsberg or Daniel Alfredsson to Stockholm? We’ll probably never know the real answer, which leaves us to merely speculate. Forsberg and his popularity during his successful seasons with the Avalanche certainly played a role in the decision, but it surely isn’t the only reason. This is why I’d like to ask: Did the 10-year-tenure of the biggest Fan Club of an NHL team contribute to the league thinking that sending the Avalanche overseas would be worth it? I’m convinced that it did. I hope that our activities throughout the years, our regular summaries and news sent also to people from the NHL, convinced them that a lot of Eurolanche members would come to see the Colorado Avalanche, which would generate interest among many other potential fans. What a beautiful birthday present. Thank you!
