Charges against Varlamov dismissed

A Denver judge has dismissed a domestic violence case against Colorado Avalanche goalie Semyon Varlamov at the request of prosecutors who said they could not prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt. Varlamov, 25, was charged in October with felony kidnapping and assault after Denver police said he drunkenly attacked his girlfriend in their downtown Denver apartment. A judge dismissed the kidnapping count in November for lack of evidence.
The district attorney’s Office filed a motion to dismiss the remaining misdemeanor assault charge on Friday morning, because further investigation led prosecutors to believe they could not prove the case at trial. Varlamov was arrested after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend, 24-year-old Evgeniya Vavrinyuk. According to court documents, the Avs goalie came home drunk, kicked her, knocked her down and dragged her by her hair, telling ger in Russian that if this were Russia, he would have beat her more.
