Jets stun Avalanche in overtime

Jets stun Avalanche in overtimeThe official game recap Colorado Avalanche vs Winnipeg Jets

Blake Wheeler scored with just over one second left in overtime Sunday to give the Winnipeg Jets a 2-1 win against the Colorado Avalanche at Pepsi Center.

Colorado goaltender Semyon Varlamov got a piece of Wheeler's deflection from the slot, but the puck leaked through and crossed the goal line just before the buzzer that would have sent the game to a shootout.

Both goalies were spectacular in the overtime. The Jets' Al Montoya finished with 33 saves for the game, while Varlamov turned aside 35 shots.

Jets captain Andrew Ladd snapped a scoreless tie at 11:42 of the third period with a one-timer from between the circles off a pass from Wheeler, but the Avalanche tied the game 29 seconds later on a goal by Nathan MacKinnon.

Varlamov made four saves during a Jets power play that started at 7:41 of the third period after Gabriel Landeskog was penalized for slashing Jacob Trouba.

Neither team could generate much in the way of quality scoring chances through the first two periods. The Jets had 22 shots and the Avalanche 17.

The Avalanche lost right wing PA Parenteau to a knee injury at 16:20 of the second period when he and Trouba clipped skates at center ice. Parenteau fell and was on all fours before he was helped into the trainer's room.

Parenteau, who has nine goals and 15 assists, was skating on a line with Gabriel Landeskog and Paul Stastny. His absence forced coach Patrick Roy to shuffle his lines for the remainder of the game.

Each team had a power play in the second period, but the Avalanche were held to one shot on goal during their man advantage and the Jets didn't register any shots on theirs.

Montoya's best save came against defenseman Erik Johnson at 5:00 of the second period. Stastny sent Johnson down the middle on a breakaway, but Montoya deflected his shot with his blocker.

Varlamov made a big glove save against Evander Kane at 15:03. Kane was alone in the right circle when he was thwarted while trying to beat Varlamov to the short side.

The Avalanche began a seven-game homestand, their longest of the season. The Jets were trying to win their second game in a row for the first time since Nov. 25-27.
