Varly named to 2nd NHL All-Star Team
NHL followed its 2014 NHL Awards show with an announcement that Colorado Avalanche goaltender Varlamov has been named to the 2013-14 NHL Second All-Star Team.Semyon Varlamov is just the second netminder in Avalanche/Nordiques history to earn an NHL postseason all-star selection, joining Patrick Roy (first team, 2001-02). Varlamov’s is the Avalanche’s first postseason all-star team selection at any position since Joe Sakic earned a first-team nod following the 2003-04 season.
Voting for the all-star team is conducted among representatives of the Professional Hockey Writers' Association at the end of the regular season.
Joining Varlamov on the Second Team is Washington’s Alex Ovechkin, St. Louis’ Alex Pietrangelo, Nashville’s Shea Weber, Anaheim’s Ryan Getzlaf and San Jose’s Joe Pavelski. First Team selections included Pittsburgh’s Sidney Crosby, Boston’s Zdeno Chara and Tuukka Rask, Anaheim’s Corey Perry, Chicago’s Duncan Keith and Dallas’ Jamie Benn.
Varlamov led all NHL goaltenders with 41 victories during the 2013-14 season, breaking Roy's franchise record for wins in a single season (40 in 2000-01). Varlamov also led all netminders in saves (1,867) and shots faced (2,013) and finished third in save percentage (.927). The Samara, Russia native also ranked among the top 10 goalies in appearances (63-4th), starts (60-7th) and minutes (3640-5th). His .927 save percentage was the highest in franchise history, and he joined Roy (1996-97) as the only Avalanche/Nordiques goaltenders to ever lead the NHL in victories.
Varlamov finished 24-9-4 at home, matching Roy's club record for home wins set in 2000-01. He was 32-4-4 when facing 30 or more shots, 7-1-1 when facing 40-plus shots and 6-0-1 when making 40 saves.
Varlamov’s 2013-14 season saw him equal a franchise record for longest streak without a regulation loss (11-0-5), tie a franchise mark for wins in a single month (10 in January) and set a new club mark for highest winning percentage in a month (.875% in October). From Dec. 31 to the end of the season, Semyon was an NHL-best 25-6-2. He posted his 100th career victory on March 12 vs. Chicago.
