Redmond named to Team USA roster

USA Hockey announced Thursday that Colorado Avalanche defenseman Zach Redmond has been added to the Men’s National Team roster for the 2015 International Ice Hockey Federation World Championship.

Redmond and the rest of Team USA will head to Ostrava and Prague, Czech Republic to compete in the tournament, which runs May 1-17.

This will be the first time that the 26-year-old rear guard has represented his country in international competition.

A native of Traverse City, Mich., Redmond is coming off his first full season in the NHL. He registered 20 points (five goals, 15 assists) in 59 games, finishing third in scoring among Avs defenseman.

Redmond’s hockey career began with the Sioux Falls Stampede in the United States Hockey League, where he put up 50 points (12 goals, 38 assists) in 108 contests and helped his team win the Clark Cup in 2007. He then shipped off to Ferris State to spend four college years skating with the Bulldogs in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association, recording 22 goals and 68 assists in 141 games. He captained the club during his senior season.

Selected in the seventh round (184th overall) by the Atlanta Thrashers (now the Winnipeg Jets), Redmond spent three years playing with the club’s AHL affiliate, the St. John’s IceCaps, after college. He played 18 games spread over two campaigns with the Jets, tallying two goals and five assists, before signing with the Avalanche as a free agent on July 1, 2014.
