The summary of the first game day of the 2016 IIHF World Championship in Russia.A total of four games were played on the opening day of the 2016 IIHF World Championship in Russia, with two Avalanche players being involved in the action – Canada’s Matt Duchene and US forward JT Compher.

The reigning champions are off to a great start, handing their archrivals from across the border a decisive loss. Canada’s assistant captain Matt Duchene had a hand in two goals – scoring the game’s fourth goal, while also assisting on Marchand’s shorthanded tally. Duchene finished the game with a TOI of 18:48, three shots on goal and a plus-minus of +2 and was deservedly named as Canada’s player of the game. JT Compher had a TOI of 15:04 and had one shot on goal. Calvin Pickard backed up starter Cam Talbot.
