Avalanche signs Tyson Barrie

The Colorado Avalanche Hockey Club announced that the team has signed defenseman Tyson Barrie to a four-year contract through the 2019-20 season. 

Barrie, 25, led all Colorado defensemen in points (49), goals (13) and assists (36) while appearing in 78 games this past season. He led the entire team with 21 power-play points (three goals, 18 assists), finished second on the club in assists and was third in average ice time (23:11). Barrie’s 13 goals tied his career high from 2013-14, while his five game-winning tallies also matched his personal best from that same year.  Selected by Colorado in the third round (64th overall) of the 2009 Entry Draft, Barrie has tallied 153 points (40 goals, 113 assists) in 264 career NHL games. He has led all Avalanche defensemen in goals for each of the past four seasons, and led all D-men in points for the past two years.

Barrie’s 53 points (12 goals, 41 assists) in 2014-15 ranked eighth among NHL defensemen and were the most by an Avalanche blueliner since 2001-02 (Rob Blake 56). The Victoria, British Columbia, native was the first Avs defender to record over 40 assists in a season since Ray Bourque had 52 in 2000-01.  Barrie has scored four career overtime goals, the most by a defenseman in franchise history. He tied the single-season franchise mark with three OT winners in 2013-14. Barrie’s 11 career game-winning goals are tied with Sandis Ozolinsh for the most by a blueliner in Avalanche/Nordiques history.

Only one franchise defenseman has recorded more game-winners in a single season than Barrie’s five: Derek Morris (seven) in 2002-03.  Internationally, Barrie helped Team Canada capture the gold medal at the 2015 IIHF World Championship held in the Czech Republic. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound rearguard also earned a silver medal with Team Canada at the 2011 IIHF World Junior Championship in Buffalo, New York.
