WJC: Jost’s opening goal

The 2017 World Junior Championship is officially underway, with a total of four games being played on the tourney’s opening day. Participating in the tournament are two prospects from the Colorado Avalanche organization – Swedish goalie Adam Werner and Canadian forward Tyson Jost. The Swedes were the first to play at the tournament, as they easily beat Denmark 6-1. Werner was left out of the lineup and had to watch the game from the stands.
Canada – Russia 5:3 (1:1, 2:0, 2:2)
4. Jost (Myers, Dube), 34. Strome (Barzal, Chabot), 38. Roy (Gauthier), 44. Barzal (DuBois), 50. Strome (Barzal) – 10. Sergachyov (Guryanov), 46. Kaprizov (Vorobyov, Rykov), 51. Rykov (Yurtaikin, Kaprizov)
The 10th overall pick of this year’s draft had a remarkable debut at the tournament, literally scoring on his first shot on goal. The goal significantly boosted Jost’s confidence and he was a constant threat in the Russian zone, creating multiple scoring chances for both him and his line-mates Nicolas Roy and Julien Gauthier. The Russians could’ve been down more if not for the heroics of goalie Ilya Samsonov, who held his ground after the opening goal until he was beaten by Dylan Strome halfway through the second period. The analysts at TSN agreed that Jost’s quick opening goal greatly contributed to the hosts’ opening day victory. Jost had a total of five shots on goal, being Canada’s most active shooter along with Dylan Strome and Mattew Barzal. The Avs prospect had a TOI of 13:06 and finished the night with a rating of +2. Although Jost had a great game, he also took a minor penalty and the Russians scored on the ensuing power-play.
