WJC: Jost, Canada lose in finals

WJC: Jost, Canada lose in finalsTyson Jost and Team Canada were beaten by Team USA in the 2017 World Junior Championship finals.

The 2017 World Junior Championship is officially in the books. The final two games – the bronze and gold medal games – were both played in the Bell Centre in Montreal, with one prospect from the Avalanche organization being involved in game action. Tyson Jost and Team Canada squared off against their archrivals from the US in the finals, while Sweden played Russia for bronze. As was the case during the entire tournament, Swedish goalie Adam Werner failed to get onto the team sheet and didn’t feature in Sweden’s lineup for any of their games at this year’s World Juniors.

The bronze medal game was a battle between goalies Felix Sandstrom and Ilya Samsonov, with the latter ultimately capturing bronze as the Russians scored in the first minute of overtime. Denis Guryanov capitalized on a misplay by the Swedes in the neutral zone, went on a breakaway and beat Sandstrom, who was voted the tournament’s best goalie, through the five-hole. Aside from winning bronze, Samsonov and forward Kirill Kaprizov were named to the tournament’s All-Star Team.

USA – Canada 4:5 after SO (0:2, 2:0, 2:2, 0:0, 1:0)

24. McAvoy (Greenway, Fox), 30. Bellows (Fox, Thompson), 45. Bellows (McAvoy), 48. White (Fox, Keller), 80. Terry – 5. Chabot (Joseph, Barzal), 10. Lauzon (Stephens), 42. N. Roy (Bean, Jost), 45. Joseph (McLeod, Chabot)

In what was a fitting finale to this year’s World Juniors, Team USA and Canada were involved in a seesaw game, with the hosts twice losing a two-goal lead and ultimately losing the game in the shootout. Denver native Troy Terry played the shootout hero yet again, as he was the shootout’s only successful scorer and ended Team USA’s four-year wait for World Junior gold. Tyson Jost also featured in the shootout, getting the call in the third round. Aside from a saved shootout attempt, Jost registered an assist on Canada’s third goal. He finished the night with a TOI of 19:13, two shots on goal and a rating of -2. Jost played in all 7 of Canada’s games at the tournament, scoring once and registering 3 assists. He also had 6 PIMs and 17 shots on goal.
