2017 IIHF Worlds: Day 9

2017 IIHF Worlds: Day 9The summary of the ninth game day of the 2017 IIHF World Championship.

With the exception of the Swedish duo of Gabriel Landeskog and Carl Soderberg, all Avalanche players playing at this year’s World Championship saw game action during the tournament’s ninth game day.

Latvia – United States 3:5 (1:0, 2:3, 0:2)

12. Blugers (Bicevskis), 21. Daugavins (Dzerins, Bukarts), 32. Cibulskis (Indrasis) – 29. Compher (Lee), 34. Bjugstad (Schmaltz, Keller), 39. Gaudreau (Trouba, Bjugstad), 57. Copp (Hellebuyck), 59. Larkin

The Americans found themselves involved in a surprisingly tight game, as the Latvians jumped to a 2-0 lead midway through the game. Following USA’s first goal of the game, Latvia answered right back to regain a two-goal lead, but ultimately lost it in the last minute of the second stanza. The Latvians never recovered and were ultimately defeated by Andrew Copp’s game-winning goal with three minutes left in regulation and Larkin’s empty-netter. JT Compher scored Team USA’s first goal of the game and put on a solid performance despite limited ice-time.Norway – Finland 2:3 after OT (1:0, 0:2, 1:0, 0:1)

19. Bastiansen (Norstebo), 60. Martinsen – 26. Hietanen (Aho, Lajunen), 29. Honka (Ohtamaa, Hannikainen), 62. Hannikainen (Pyorala)

Last year’s runner-ups were yet again involved in a very even match and found themselves down 1-0 after Bastiansen’s strike in the final minute of the first period. The Finns then scored two goals in the second period in the span of three minutes to gain the lead, but were stunned by former Colorado forward Andreas Martinsen’s equalizer in the final minute of regulation. Despite this, the Finns scored less than two minutes into OT to record a vital extra point. Mikko Rantanen had a rather uneventful game and failed to get on the scoresheet.Russia – Slovakia 6:0 (3:0, 2:0, 1:0)

2. Dadonov (Gusev, Shipachyov), 14. Dadonov (Gusev, Shipachyov), 20. Mironov, 23. Kucherov (Tkachyov, Kiselevich), 33. Telegin (Zub, Plotnikov), 56. Gavrikov (Shipachyov, Dadonov)

The Russians cruised to an easy victory against the struggling Slovaks, effectively deciding the game in the opening period after scoring three goals. Russia could’ve won by a bigger margin, but were comfortable with their lead and were trying to make pretty plays at the cost of more goals in the latter stages of the game. Andrei Mironov, who signed an entry-level contract with the Avalanche yesterday, recorded his first goal of the tournament, as his shot from the point was deflected by one of the Slovak defensemen and found its way into the net.

Slovenia – Belarus 2:5 (2:1, 0:4, 0:0)

17. Jeglic (Verlic, Sabolic), 20. Rodman (Kovacevic, Pretnar) – 14. Pavlovich (Shinkevich, Linglet), 21. Kovyrshin (A. Kostitsyn, S. Kostitsyn), 30. Pavlovich (Shinkevich), 39. Shinkevich (Pavlovich, Linglet), 40. Stas (Stefanovich)

Italy – Germany 1:4 (1:2, 0:2, 0:0)

5. M. Marchetti (Kostner, S. Marchetti) – 4. Ehrhoff (Draisaitl), 19. Plachta (D. Seidenberg, Kahun), 23. Y. Seidenberg (Hordler), 26. Kahun (Y. Seidenberg)

Canada – Switzerland 2:3 after OT (2:0, 0:0, 0:2, 0:1)

5. O’Reilly (Marner, Parayko), 7. Marner (Lee, Konecny) – 47. Herzog (Praplan, Richard), 50. Praplan (Hollenstein), 64. Herzog (Untersander, Ambuhl)

The Canadians jumped to an early 2-0 lead after scoring two goals in under two minutes and chasing goalie Jonas Hiller out of the net. Leonardo Genoni, who took his place, was perfect for the remainder of the night, stopping every shot he faced and giving the Swiss a much-needed boost. They used their newly-gained momentum and scored two quick goals in the third period to force overtime. Despite the Canadians dominating play in overtime, the Swiss scored on their only shot in OT to finish the comeback. Calvin Pickard stopped 23 shots for a SVS% of 0.885. Nathan MacKinnon put on a solid performance despite not getting on the scoresheet, while Matt Duchene struggled yet again and is still waiting for his first point at this year’s tournament.Stats of Avalanche players after the ninth game day (GP, G, A, P):
