2017 IIHF Worlds: Day 10

The tenth game day of the 2017 IIHF World Championship saw four Avalanche players suit for their respective games. JT Compher and the US played Slovakia, while the Swedish duo of Gabriel Landeskog and Carl Soderberg faced Denmark and Finland’s Mikko Rantanen played against Switzerland.
Slovakia – United States 1:6 (0:1, 1:3, 0:2)

The Americans dominated Slovakia throughout the entire game, effectively deciding the fate of the match with three goals in the second period. JT Compher’s physical play caused problems for the Slovaks, but the forward failed to record a point while playing limited minutes.
France – Czech Republic 2:5 (0:1, 1:2, 1:2)

The Swedes, who were joined by NHL stars Nicklas Backstrom and Henrik Lundqvist prior to the beginning of the game, held a comfortable three-goal lead after two periods, but the Danes scored two goals in the span of six minutes to put Sweden under pressure. Ultimately, Sweden held on to the lead, scoring a goal with less than three minutes left in regulation to record a win. Both Soderberg and Landeskog were held of the scoresheet.
Switzerland – Finland 2:3 after OT (2:1, 0:0, 0:1, 0:1)

Switzerland looked posed to record another upset against a paper favorite after they chased goalie Jonas Korpisalo out of the Finnish net midway through the opening period. The Finns didn’t want to lose points yet again and battled to overcome the Swiss in overtime. Mikko Rantanen tied the game with a power-play marker in the third period, record his second goal of the tournament.
