2016 IIHF Worlds Summary: Day 12

2016 IIHF Worlds Summary: Day 12The summary of the twelfth game day of the 2016 IIHF World Championship in Russia.

The games played during the twelfth game day of this year’s World Championship closed out the tournament’s group stage, with almost every Avalanche player attending the tournament playing today, Calvin Pickard being the sole exception.

Czech Republic – Switzerland 5:4 (1:1, 1:0, 3:3)

17. Birner, 25. Kaspar, 42. Zatovic, 50. Zohorna, 55. Jordan – 12. Hollenstein, 46. Moser, 56. Schneeberger, 60. Andrighetto

The Swiss hoped for a win in their last game of the group stage, which would qualify them for the quarterfinals. Reto Berra got the nod in goal, but he and his teammates came up short against the in-form Czechs. Berra made 26 saves and allowed four goals.

USA – Slovakia 2:3 after OT (0:1, 1:0, 1:1, 0:1)

38. Nelson, 43. Foligno – 19. Jaros, 53. Skalicky, 61. Dano

Today’s first Group B game featured two teams in a do-or-die matchup, as both the US and Slovakia were eyeing a place in the quarterfinals. The US were in the better position, as they just needed to avoid a loss in regulation. JT Compher played a little over 13 minutes and finished the game -1.

Belarus – France 3:0 (0:0, 2:0, 1:0)

26. Stas, 39. Platt, 45. Stas

Latvia – Norway 1:3 (1:1, 0:2, 0:0)

12. Indrasis – 17. K. A. Olimb, 21. Holos, 21. Johannesen

Norway bested the Latvians in a game that was more or less symbolic, as both teams knew that this would be their last game of the tournament. Andreas Martinsen got an assist on ex-Avalanche Jonas Holos’ goal. He finished the game +1 with two shots on goal and 2 PIMs.

Canada – Finland 0:4 (0:0, 0:3, 0:1)

27. Kivisto, 37. Komarov, 39. Pyorala, 43. Koskiranta

Canada and Finland battled for Group B’s first place, with the Finns shutting out the Canadians 4:0. Matt Duchene faced off against Finnish youngster Mikko Rantanen, with the latter recording his first point at the senior international level – an assist on Finland’s first goal. Overall, he played a good game and finished the night +1, while Duchene only recorded a single shot on goal.
