2016 IIHF Worlds Summary: Quarterfinals
After an off-day, the 80th IIHF World Championship continued with the quarterfinal round, with every remaining Avalanche player, sans goalie Calvin Pickard, getting to play today.
Czech Republic – USA 1:2 after SO (1:0, 0:1, 0:0, 0:1)
16. Zohorna – 22. Matthews, shootout-deciding goal Matthews
The US pulled off a rather surprising win, knocking out the in-form Czechs with a shootout win. Auston Matthews, the potential first overall pick of the upcoming draft, stole the show for the Americans. JT Compher had a solid game, as he played about 13 minutes and had one shot on goal.
Finland – Denmark 5:1 (1:0, 2:1, 2:0)
15. M. Granlund, 22. Koskiranta, 39. Laine, 58. J. Jokinen, 59. M. Granlund – 32. Eller
The Finns cruised to an easy victory against surprise quarterfinalist Denmark, almost blanking the Danes while scoring five times. Finnish youngster Mikko Rantanen didn’t get on the scoresheet, as he only recorded 2 PIMs. During Rantanen’s penalty, Denmark scored their only goal of the game.
Canada – Sweden 6:0 (1:0, 3:0, 2:0)
19. Scheifele, 27. Dumba, 33. Marchand, 33. Domi, 52. M. Stone, 54. Brassard
The Canadians stunned Sweden, as they shut out one of the tournament’s favorites en route to an easy 6:0 win. Matt Duchene, who’s been scoring on a regular basis during the tournament, failed to get on the scoresheet. Anton Lindholm made his debut for Sweden, in which was his first and only game of this year’s tournament. The Swedish defenseman finished the game -2.
