2016 IIHF Worlds Summary: Semifinals
The 2016 IIHF World Championship in Russia continued with the semifinal round, with both games being played in Moscow. The remaining Avalanche players played for a berth in the tournament’s finals and only Calvin Pickard didn’t get to play, as he once again backed up Canada’s starter Cam Talbot.
Finland – Russia 3:1 (0:1, 3:0, 0:0)
26. Aho, 36. J. Jokinen, 39. Aho – 3. Shirokov
The first semifinal game saw the hosts battling the unbeaten Finns for a chance to play for gold. Finland overcame a 1-0 opening period, scoring three unanswered goals in the second period to seal the game. Mikko Rantanen only played about 5 minutes, but finished the game with 2 shots on goal and a plus-minus rating of -1, as he was on the ice for Russia’s lone goal.
Canada – USA 4:3 (2:0, 1:3, 1:0)

The second semifinal game saw archrivals Canada and the US playing a highly entertaining game, with both teams having Avalanche players in their lineup. Matt Duchene played a solid game and although he didn’t get on the scoresheet, he finished the game +2. During 18 minutes on the ice, Duchene failed to record a shot on goal. JT Compher had a TOI of about 14 minutes, but he recorded an assist, to bring his point total to 3.
