2016 IIHF Worlds Summary: Finals
The 2016 IIHF World Championship in came to an end, as the medal games were played today. Three Avalanche players suited up for game action, as Matt Duchene and Mikko Rantanen battled for gold, while JT Compher faced the hosts in the bronze medal game.

Compher and his teammates were clearly outmatched by the hosts, as the Russians scored seven times, while only conceding two goals from Boston youngster Vatrano. JT Compher played for about 10 minutes, but failed to get on the scoresheet, while also finishing the night with zero shots on goal. He finished the game -1.

Even before the start of the game, it was clear that at least one Avalanche player would win gold at this year’s Worlds. Mikko Rantanen had the opportunity to win his second gold medal in a single year, while Matt Duchene could add to his gold medal collection and Calvin Pickard could win his first gold at a senior international tournament. In the end, it was the Canadian duo, who lifted the World Championship trophy, as they narrowly edged the Finns. Matt Duchene scored the last goal of the game, an empty-netter, in the final second of the game. He played for about 16 minutes and also recorded an assist on Connor McDavid’s opening goal. Duchene finished the game +2. Rantanen only played a little over 6 minutes and recorded a shot on goal. Pickard was once again only backing up Cam Talbot.
